(Pre)Therapy Sessions FAQ
Session Structure & Content
-
What happens in therapy sessions?Sessions are child-led and tailored based on assessment findings. The therapist engages children in play-based activities designed to address:
- Sensory processing
- Gross motor control and coordination
- Fine motor control and coordination
- Visual perceptual and visual motor skills
- Oral motor skills
- Social engagement (where applicable)
-
How long does a therapy session last? Each session lasts 45-50 minutes. Please allow up to one hour for your visit to include feedback time.
-
What if my child is attending nursery or school? We offer morning appointments that allow children to attend school/nursery afterward. Some parents arrange afternoon slots with school permission. We don't recommend late afternoon sessions after a full school day as children may be too tired to fully engage.
Parent Involvement & Support
-
What is expected of parents?
Since therapy sessions represent only about 1% of your child's time, parent involvement is crucial:
- Implement therapist recommendations at home
- Read and understand the assessment report
- Ask questions during sessions if unclear about recommendations
- Communicate, collaborate and coordinate with the therapist for best outcomes
- Review recommended reading materials
- Coordinate with school/nursery staff when applicable
-
Should I expect changes in behavior after starting therapy? While most children become calmer and more regulated with regular sessions, some may temporarily show increased behaviors. We recommend keeping a diary of activities, eating times, sleep patterns, and behavior triggers to help identify patterns and inform therapy approaches.
Session Planning & Duration
-
How long should we continue with OT sessions?
For new clients, we recommend:
- Initial commitment of 24 sessions
- First block of 8 sessions twice weekly
- Sessions booked and paid for in blocks of 8
After 24 sessions, the therapist will assess progress and recommend whether to continue based on your child's needs and your ability to implement strategies independently.
-
Can we try other interventions alongside OT?We generally don't recommend parallel interventions as they may overwhelm the child and make it difficult to determine effectiveness. Speech therapy can usually be combined with OT, provided both therapists follow compatible approaches.
Reports & Policies
-
Are reports included with therapy sessions?Therapy sessions do not include written reports. However, brief summary notes can be provided upon request after completing a program (24 sessions/3 blocks).
