Sensory integration therapy
Sparks therapy's treatment room is a well equipped sensory integration clinic with a variety of equipment including suspension equipment
to provide intense tactile, vestibular and proprioceptive sensory experiences. This enables children to appropriately integrate and respond to sensory input, allowing them to both make sense of and
feel safer in the world.
Sensory Integration / Sensory processing
Why is it important and what happens when it is not working well?
Sensory processing is the ability to register and modulate sensory information in the environment and execute an appropriate response to it.
It is an internal process of the nervous system to enable us to organise information from within our body and environment to participate in daily routines.
We have our basic senses the eye, ears, nose, mouth and touch. In addition we have a sense of movement and balance and our body position sense.
When they all communicate well and support each other we are be able to filter the irrelevant information and focus on what is important and
make a judgement call, formulate appropriate plans and execute it. If it is not working well it might appear like a traffic jam
-e.g. at nursery or school : sitting on the carpet , focussing and listening to the teacher sing and follow directions, while your friend is elbowing into
your space can seem like quite a daunting task. Sensory processing difficulties are often seen in children who are born prematurely, who exhibit delays in development
due to an immature nervous system or those who are at the risk of developing autism or ADHD.
