What is Paediatric Occupational therapy ?
During the early years, a child's primary occupation is play, which serves as a platform for learning. The activities that the child chooses to engage in are intrinsically motivating and usually for amusement, enjoyment or self-expression. Play in a therapeutic context promotes skill development and interaction with others. An occupational therapist uses play to facilitate exploration encouraging a child to try various types of play and decide which one s/he finds most enjoyable. The therapist may also use play to facilitate functioning and development of the child.
What is Sensory integration therapy?
Why Ayres Sensory integration (ASI)?
A. Jean Ayres developed the sensory integration model to show how the interaction between the sensory systems - tactile, vestibular,
proprioceptive, auditory and visual systems resulted in an integrated output.
She emphasized that sensory information provides an important foundation for learning and behaviour. The ASI approach fosters the child's active
participation in individually tailored sensory-rich experiences. Based on the developmental process, the earliest experiences in life serve as
building blocks for future skill development. When the sensory systems are unable to communicate or integrate information, the signals are
often lost resulting in impaired sensory processing. This can manifest as a fussy baby, under responsive or sleepy baby, or a baby who chooses
to stay put and not move or interact much with his/her environment. The term ASI is used to distinguish it from other approaches which use
sensation as an active component of intervention.
How do I know which service or therapist my child needs?

How many therapy sessions does my child need?
This can only be decided after your child is seen at the clinic. Treatment may be offered in intensive blocks i.e. 2/3 sessions a week for a fixed number of weeks or as weekly treatment sessions depending on the family's needs.
